Why Choose To Self Publish?

Niche market book publishing and personal reasons are huge push factors

Niche Market

Some books will appeal only to a very small niche market, like a book on crocheting, recipes for vegans (although this market is growing), a specific breed of dog etcetera. For smaller niche markets where your audience/readership is expected to be far smaller too, it is often even more difficult to secure a deal with a traditional publisher as most of them are understandably concerned typically with profits – sales and numbers. Customarily, the readership won’t be big enough to be a major money-maker. Self publishing is then the best answer and route to go for a niche market book. If you as the author decide your book is worth publishing for your niche market and you’re willing to invest in your book to share your passion with others who are interested too, then this is a win-win scenario. You no longer have to print large quantities as you can make use of POD (print on demand) service, thereby only having small quantities digitally printed as you need them, and of course the e-book and online upload options which are also inexpensive and help to present your book to a wider global market. Usually if you are part of a niche market, you often already have many contacts in this market meaning that you can network online with your niche market to create a ready-made sales channel. Guaranteed, whatever your field or hobby, there are always others interested in it too and with the internet, it has become a global world, making it easy to network and get in touch with like-minded people worldwide.

Personal Reasons

Much like the niche market who have a hobby or field they would like to write about and share with like-minded people who are interested, there are also many who simply want to write a book for personal reasons, regardless of how many would actually like to read it or be interested in it. For them it may be more about leaving a legacy for family and friends by telling their life story. Perhaps they wish to help a small group who have suffered or are going through similar experiences to theirs. It could even be a career move to give the author more authority, respect and standing in his or her given field. As with niche market publishing, it doesn’t matter that the market is often small, meaning that fewer books are sold and therefore less money is made. In both cases, the aim is not really to be a money-spinner which would simply be an added bonus to the primary reasoning. Again, much like the niche market, the main reasoning behind the desire to publish, is usually more about passion – the passion to either help people better themselves or alleviate their suffering by sharing your story, or being passionate about writing and publishing your memoirs in order to leave a legacy for generations to come, or a passion for your career and the desire for status and recognition amongst your peers and colleagues through being a published author which may help boost your position. It’s not about the bottom line and all the money you can make – yes although that would be great, it’s much more personal than that; you want to leave something behind, help others or create some personal leverage in your career. Unfortunately niche market books and those with only a small personal appeal would often never see the light of day, but with the option of self publishing, authors of such books have been able to realise their dreams of publication and many have even surpassed their expected sales and success never mind their joy and enjoyment of the publication journey.
