Self Publishing No Longer Carries a Negative Stigma

Gone are the days when self publishing would only be used as a last resort when considering publishing a book. Indeed, in the past, writing a book and having it self published was considered taboo as it was then perceived that your work was not worthwhile and had thus fallen short of a publication deal whereby conventional publishers would accept it and take on the costs and job of publication. However,
today and for several years now, this view and negative stigma, is no longer the case. In fact, countless authors are now voluntarily choosing to self-publish not as a last resort or even as a second choice, but as a first choice. There are even some who choose the self-publication route when they may have a traditional publisher interested in signing them on.

So why is this? What happened that has brought about this change of heart, so much so that some conventional publishers have even opened self publishing divisions? Well, it can be put down to a number of reasons but most notable, the vast improvement in the quality and standard of self-published books over the last two decades with organisations like Reach Publishers offering more professional editing skills, design, layout and print services. Add to this the appeal of retaining ownership of one’s work, as well as control of content and the overall look, the speed of turnaround and control of price and sales, and it starts to shine as a doable and desirable option. Furthermore, what has also become notably apparent, is that the majority of readers simply do not care who published the book i.e. whether it was published by a renowned publisher or self published. In fact, hardly anyone ever consults the copyright page at all. So in all honesty, it really doesn’t matter who published it. What is important and matters most is of course the content, an attention-grabbing and eye-catching cover and back cover text and naturally good reviews can help. Sometimes the name of the author can sell books too but even this is not that vital anymore if various other elements are in place. The world is changing fast along with views and taboos and self-publishing has become a very accepted and oft first-choice preference when reviewing options to publishing a book you have written.
